Plumber Quote Template UK: Bathrooms, Boilers and the Gas Safe Line

Plumbing quotes fail in two predictable places: scope creep on bathroom refits ("while you're here, could you just…") and the gas boundary — what a plumber can legally do versus what needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. A quote that draws both lines clearly gets paid without arguments.

Here's a template built for that, with 2026 benchmark prices. For the fundamentals every trade shares, see how to write a contractor quote that wins jobs.

What Makes Plumbing Quotes Different

1. The Gas Safe boundary must be explicit Anything on the gas side — connecting a hob, moving a gas pipe, commissioning a boiler — is legally restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers. If you're registered, put your registration number on the quote; it's a selling point. If you're not, the quote must say the gas connection is excluded and to be arranged with a Gas Safe engineer. Leaving it ambiguous is how clients end up assuming it's included.

2. Wet trades meet finished surfaces Plumbing lives behind tiles, under floors and inside walls someone else finished. Who opens up, who makes good, and who re-tiles is the most common plumbing dispute — the template forces it into writing.

3. Old pipework is a lottery Imperial-to-metric joints, corroded compression fittings, lead mains. Like a roofer's contingency note, yours should say: found problems get reported and priced before any extra work happens.

How to Price Plumbing Work

UK benchmarks, checked 31 August 2026 against current UK cost guides (London and the South East run 30–40% above average):

  • Like-for-like combi boiler swap: £1,800–£3,500 fully installed, typically one day; premium models and conversions £3,000–£4,500+
  • Bathroom plumbing refit: £4,000–£8,000 for a typical family bathroom (the full renovation including tiling and electrics runs higher — our bathroom renovation quote guide covers the whole job)
  • Materials on a refit: £400–£900 of pipework plus £150–£300 of fittings is normal
  • Hourly rates: regional medians run from roughly £42/hour in the North East to well over £60 in London

Benchmarks are a sanity check. Your price comes from your own costs — the free day rate calculator turns overheads and real billable days into a defensible rate.

Common Plumbing Quote Mistakes

Assuming the client knows what Gas Safe means Spell it out: "Gas work is legally restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers. Our registration: [number]." One sentence, and the cheaper unregistered quote suddenly looks like what it is.

"Supply and fit bathroom suite" with no makes or ranges The £180 basin and the £680 basin both fit that sentence. Specify, or carry a provisional sum ("PC sum of £X for sanitaryware, client's choice") so changes reprice cleanly.

No line on client-supplied goods Half of bathroom refits now involve a suite the client bought online. Quote your labour on it happily — but add that missing parts, damaged goods or non-UK fittings are chargeable delays.

Ignoring the water-off window Tell them when the water is off and for how long. Households plan around it, and it reads as professionalism.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new boiler cost fitted in 2026?

£1,800–£3,500 for a like-for-like combi swap fully installed, with the average around £2,400. Changing boiler type, relocating the boiler or upgrading pipework takes it to £3,000–£4,500+ and 2–3 days rather than one.

Can a plumber legally work on a gas boiler?

Only if they're Gas Safe registered — it's a legal requirement for any gas work, including disconnecting and reconnecting appliances. A plumber who isn't registered can do everything on the wet side but must bring in a registered engineer for the gas connection, and the quote should say who arranges that.

How much is bathroom plumbing for a refit?

£4,000–£8,000 covers the plumbing side of a typical UK family bathroom refit in 2026 — strip out, first and second fix, and commissioning. Tiling, electrics and decoration are on top, which is why a clear exclusions list matters.

Should I charge for quoting?

For standard domestic work, no — a free, fast, professional quote is how you win the job. For large refurbishments needing surveys and drawings, a paid specification that's deductible from the job price is fair and filters serious clients.
